  • Supplier selection and segmentation are crucial tasks of companies in order to reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of their goods. To handle uncertainty and dynamicity in the supplier segmentation problem, this research thus proposes a new dynamic generalized fuzzy multi-criteria group decision making (MCGDM) approach from the aspects of capabil- ity and willingness and with respect to environmental issues. The proposed approach defines the aggregated ratings of alternatives, the aggregated weights of criteria, and the weighted ratings by using generalized fuzzy numbers with the effect of time weight. Next, we determine the ranking order of alternatives via a popular centroi...

  • Ranking fuzzy numbers is an important component in the decision-making process with the last few decades having seen a large number of ranking methods. Ezzati et al. (Expert Syst Appl 39:690–695, 2012) proposed a revised approach for ranking symmetric fuzzy numbers based on the magnitude concepts to overcome the shortcoming of Abbasbandy and Hajjari’s method. Despite its merits, some shortcomings associated with Ezzati et al.’s approach include: (1) it cannot consistently rank the fuzzy numbers and their images; (2) it cannot effectively rank symmetric fuzzy numbers; and (3) it cannot rank nonnormal fuzzy numbers. This paper thus proposes a revised method to rank generalized ...

  • Current computer-aided layout design systems only support layout state generation, which is not ideal for engineering layout design based on distributed knowledge and intelligent environment. This paper proposes a system framework to enable distributed engineering layout design in service-oriented architecture. A federated layout design system based on Service-ORiented Computing EnviRonment (SORCER) implements the framework. In order to supply design services to users, distributed design resources and design tools can be wrapped as SORCER service providers. And the users should be wrapped as service requestors so that they can join in the federated layout design system. A layout des...

  • Determining the arithmetic operations of fuzzy numbers is a very important issue in fuzzy sets theory, decision process, data analysis, and applications. In 1985, Chen formulated the arithmetic operations between generalized fuzzy numbers by proposing the function principle. Since then, researchers have shown an increased interest in generalized fuzzy numbers. Most of existing studies done using generalized fuzzy numbers were based on Chen’s (1985) arithmetic operations. Despite its merits, there were some shortcomings associated with Chen’s method. In order to overcome the drawbacks of Chen’s method, this paper develops the extension principle to derive arithmetic operations between...
