  • A series of pyrene-based salicylaldimine-type ligands containing n-octyl or cyclohexyl or phenyl groups at imine nitrogen group, 1-hydroxy-2-[(N-substituted-imino)methyl]-pyrenes (octyl 1, cyclohexyl 1b and phenyl 1c), were synthesized and characterized. The ligands reacting with zinc acetate in the presence of sodium acetate gave the bis(salicylaldiminato)-type Zn(II) complexes, [bis[2-[(N-substituted-imino)methyl]-1-pyrenolato-N,O] zinc(II)] (octyl 1(Zn), cyclohexyl 1b(Zn), phenyl 1c(Zn)).   • Taxillus thibetensis (Lecomte) Danser(Loranthaceae), a species previously known only from China, is newly recorded from Vietnam. A specimen discovered in the rainforest of Lao Cai province, Northern Vietnam was identified as Taxillus thibetensis based on both morphological and molecular data. The Vietnamese individuals of Taxillus thibetensis are closely related to T. thibetensis in China. A detailed description, illustration and data on distribution, ecology, phenology of Vietnamese Taxillus thibetensis are provided.

  • The X-ray structure of 9-anthraldehyde-4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone was firstly determined. The Ni(II) complex with this ligand was prepared upon reaction with chloride salt. Mass spectrometry result confirms correct formulation of the complex. Unusual 1H NMR signal pattern of anthracene moiety reveal cis arrangement cemented by intramolecular – stackings between aromatic rings. As a result of this interaction, the electronic structure of anthracene ring is perturbed and gives rise to structureless and broad absorption and emission bands

  • Purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) are anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, which are able to photoheterotrophically grow in the presence of excessive nutrients.   • We here reported a newly recorded Piper species for the flora of Vietnam, namely Piper ribesioides Wall. (Piperaceae). This species is most morphologically similar to P. politifolium C.DC. by sharing glabrous plants and fruits with a stipe, but it differs from the latter having a monoecious habit (vs. dioecious), stamens 4 (vs. 2), and a cordate leaf base with equal or subequal lobes (vs. oblique with unequal lobes). Descriptions, illustrations, information on ecology, and taxonomic notes of the species is provided.

  • Platinum(II) complex of benzimidazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbene with formula [PtCl2(DMSO)(bimy)] was successfully synthesized via one pot reaction between 1,3-diisopropyl benzimidazolium (bimy×HBr), Ag2O and [PtCl2(DMSO)] (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide). The complex was characterized by means of multinuclear (1H and 13C{1H}) magnetic resonance and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD).   • Human adenovirus (HAdVs) are responsible for about 65-90% of viral conjunctivitis. Understandings of HAdVs bring promises in prevention, treatments, and biological preparations. However, thorough researches on structural proteins of HAdVs are still limited in Vietnam. In this study, we have sequenced the entire coding gene of protein hexon from HAdV-3 causing conjunctivitis in Vietnam and compared with the reference sequence in NCBI database. We detected 42 DNA variants, of which, 11 resulted in amino acid substitutions. Simulation of HAdV-3 hexon structure showed that all 11 substitutions located in crucial positions.
