Authors: Phan, Huy Lê ; Nguyễn, Đình Chiến ; Nguyễn, Quang Ngọc (1995) - Gốm Bát Tràng là tên gọi chung cho các loại đồ gốm Việt Nam được sản xuất tại làng Bát Tràng, thuộc xã Bát Tràng, huyện Gia Lâm, Hà Nội. Theo nghĩa Hán Việt, chữ Bát (鉢) là bát ăn của nhà sư (tiếng Phạn là Patra), chữ Tràng (場, còn đọc là Trường) nghĩa là "cái sân lớn", là mảnh đất dành riêng cho chuyên môn. Theo các cụ già trong làng kể lại, chữ Bát bên trái là bộ "Kim-金" ví với sự giàu có, "本-bản" có nghĩa là cội nguồn, nguồn gốc. Dùng chữ Bát như vậy để khuyên răn con cháu "có nghề có nghiệp thì cũng không được quên gốc". Hiện nay, tại các đình, đền và chùa ở Bát Tràng đều vẫn còn các chữ Bát Tràng được viết bằng chữ Hán là 鉢場.
